Our classrooms are very student-centered! We draw upon experiences of the students with discussions, question and answer sessions and lots of learning activities. Our learning activities involve the students in many different ways, ranging from individual work to group work, from role-play to practice sessions, from identifying problems and defining issues to problem-solving and critical thinking challenges.

Our Classrooms in Action

This first set of photos directly below is from a class Cokie teaches with Jenny McHenry (a fellow Master Instructor). The class is "The New Communications Training Program" , a 40-hour class that teaches trainers, supervisors and managers how to train their dispatch personnel using an innovative approach to training centered on problem-based learning.

The second set of photos is from a class on Critical Incidents that Cokie teaches in the POST Basic Dispatch Course. In some of these photos you'll see that students are designing a major event with easel paper, marking pens and a wide assortment of toys. Discussion then ensues about what it takes to manage such an event, what tasks a dispatcher might need to attend to, what resources will be needed for the short term and over the long haul, and how ICS, SEMS and NIMS impact and help manage these events. Other photos in this section show students interacting with each other and discussing key points with fellow students.
